This tour is designed for those who wish to discover the fascinating history of the Nurra and the Alghero area, inhabited since Prehistoric times, long before the foundation of the medieval town. Ancient Pre-Nuragic and Nuragic civilizations left behind extraordinary archaeological remains that we will discover together throughout our journey.

The first part of the day will be dedicated to the Nuragic Complex of Palmavera, one of the most important archaeological sites in the Alghero area. During the Bronze Age, a large settlement developed here around the Nuragic towers. One of its most fascinating structures is the so-called Meeting Hut, a large space probably used for community gatherings and collective decision-making.

We will then continue to the Necropolis of Anghelu Ruju, one of Sardinia’s most important prehistoric burial sites. The necropolis consists of numerous rock-cut tombs known as Domus de Janas, excavated into the stone and used during different phases of Prehistory. Their shaft and dromos entrances, symbolic decorations, bull representations and architectural elements carved into the rock make Anghelu Ruju an exceptional testimony to the spirituality and funerary rituals of Sardinia’s ancient communities.

The second part of the day will be dedicated to the historic centre of Alghero. Walking through its charming medieval streets, we will discover historic buildings and monuments connected to the families that shaped the city’s history, including Palazzo de Ferrera, Palazzo Lavagna and Palazzo Serra. Here, Catalan Gothic architecture still reflects the deep historical and cultural connection between Alghero and Catalonia.

Once in Piazza Duomo, we will visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria, one of the city’s most important religious monuments. Together with the Church of San Francesco, it represents one of the finest examples of religious architecture from Alghero’s Catalan period. The bell tower and magnificent Gothic portal are among the most fascinating examples of Catalan Gothic architecture in the historic centre.

Crossing Piazza del Teatro, we will finally reach the Archaeological Museum of Alghero, where we will complete our journey through the history of the territory. The museum explores three main themes: the sea, ways of living, and the sacred world and death, offering a deeper understanding of the civilizations and communities that inhabited the Alghero area over thousands of years.
