A journey to discover the city of Alghero
Alghero Full-Day Tour
This full-day tour will take us on a journey through the history of Alghero and its surrounding territory, following an itinerary that brings together nature and culture, history and archaeology.
We will begin at the Archaeological Museum of Alghero, where we will explore the history of the area and its earliest archaeological evidence. We will travel through the main chapters of Alghero’s past, from Prehistory to the Roman and medieval periods, through the era of the Doria family of Genoa, the Aragonese rule and, finally, the period under the House of Savoy.
Leaving the museum, we will visit the nearby Church of San Michele, before walking along Via Carlo Alberto to the Church of San Francesco and its beautiful cloister. The complex is one of the finest examples of religious architecture and Catalan Gothic style in Alghero.
We will then continue along Vicolo del Teatro to Piazza del Teatro, home to the Civic Theatre, inaugurated in 1862 and distinguished by its remarkable interior structure, built predominantly of wood. Walking along Via Principe Umberto, we will encounter Palazzo Machin, with its impressive late-Gothic portal and elegant Renaissance windows.
Our journey continues to the Cathedral of Santa Maria, entering through its striking Gothic portal. Here we will discover one of Alghero’s most iconic monuments and, from the bell tower, enjoy a spectacular view over the historic centre and the sea. After exploring the Cathedral, we will emerge through its monumental Neoclassical portico into Piazza Duomo.
Continuing towards Piazza Civica, we will admire Palazzo Serra, Palazzo de Ferrera and Palazzo Lavagna, important examples of Alghero’s historic architecture. Finally, we will pass through Porta a Mare, the ancient gateway once used by those arriving from the harbour, before ending our tour with a walk along the bastions and ancient fortifications, surrounded by some of the most beautiful views in Alghero.
